Utter subordination is the self-released debut album of German death metallers Mental Amputation, and it presents 50 minutes of chunky old school. With quite a slick riffing and a fair amount of technical solos theres no questions as to where these lads draw influences; the old school Florida scene. And the result actually reminds me quite a lot of their fellow countrymen Warspite, but with a thrashier and slower approach. Although theres a fair amount of speed, the main is set at a rather mid tempo, with emphasis on more intricate drum patterns instead of blasting. But what really seems to be their golden moments are the chunky and slick riffing, backed up by a deep grunting voice.
And eventhough they definitely know how to write and play wicked old school death metal, Im not as convinced as Id like to be. The production is heavy and thick, and really lets the brutality of the grand riffing shine through, and I have no doubt about their skill as its tight and energetic. But it still comes off as a tad bland, which doesnt seem fair, not even to me. I cant really explain it, but theres just something missing to really get me going. Although fans of Incantation and whatnot should have no problems taking Mental Amputation to heart.
