Theyre back with a new assault of progressive and boundary-breaking black metal. Im not getting any closer to grasping Non Opus Deis sound, but they certainly prove they know how to stir it up and make you think now just what the hell was that And there are many times throughout Constant flow where I have to really open up my mind to the unconventionality of the music, whereas Id most likely not take it to heart otherwise. But since this was received as a promo I feel obliged to give the album several good listens before judging it. And its a good thing, cause Im pretty sure I wouldve brushed it off as too out there if I hadnt.
The lyrics are mostly in English, but some are in Polish. They might as well all have been in Polish, cause neither of it makes any sense to me. I suppose its some form of cosmic subject I dont get. While I think their previous album The quintessence suffered a bit from lack of speed (although it had its moments) things have certainly sped up this time around. Absolutely frantic blasting can be heard, but mixed with really unorthodox and technical, slower, drum patterns. And the riffing is just as unorthodox, with some stuff going for a black/death style almost la Behemoth, but still never getting close to it. Klimorhs vocals are well dispersed over tons of different styles, and neither of them closing in on conventional black metal shrieks. But he takes some psychotic screaming and mixes it with a harsh voice that suddenly turns into clean vocals.
The riffing is highly innovative for black metal, and the song structure that builds these tunes are almost unheard of in the genre. Youd be much more likely to find something like this in a Meshuggah album, but Non Opus Dei adds that complexity to the black mould. And while this sounds extremely schizophrenic it still comes out as a whole and solid album. Its easy to discard it for being (as I said before) just too out there, but if you give it a listen youll realize its really damn good. And this my friend; the excellent drumming and string-handling, schizoid song structures and wicked vocals baked into a lucid production is cause for an enjoyable listen that is sure to make you think now just what the hell was that
