An interesting new acquaintance I made here with this band. The sinister artwork alone is enough to cause an uncontrolled raising of an eyebrow. So what to expect from the music?
Well, death metal drifting in all kinds of directions in search of influences. My initial thought was Nile, as the first track reminds me a lot Nile (a thought that pops up from time to time during the entire album). But they don't stop there. Shaarimoth goes old school with Morbid Angel to find the true elements of death metal, and they make a pit stop in the black metal swamp in search of a grim atmosphere. And the result is quite appealing. It serves for a very interesting mix of blast beats, mesmerizing ambience and technical guitar work. The vocals focus mainly on growls, to occasionally go off into spine-shattering screams. I'm not really sure what language some lyrics are in, as I have no freakin' idea what Uzza Hubur, Igi-Gal U Da-Ra-Es means. But in the mist of it all I manage to catch onto words like Absu, Marduk and Tiamat, and the whole experience just makes it feel even more occult.
While the whole album feels like a whip of fresh air (or should I say stench of rotten air from a recently opened crypt?), there are some parts that are just mind-blowing. The pounding strings and punishing drums in Flood the Cosmic Gates pushes me further and further back in my chair, as its mere power and drive is enough to cripple you. About 3.17 into Current 11 a clean voice appears in the dark, and the result is chilling. That's just two parts that will make your head spin, and the album is filled with 'em. A fucking interesting introduction to one of Scandinavia's most occult and obscure bands. I'm eager to see where Shaarimoth will go next.
