This album really couldnt have arrived at a better time. For a long time now Ive been really low on cash, and so I havent afforded to pick up the latest album by one of my all-time favourites. So imagine my joy when the bloody thing drops into my mailbox as a promo. Fucking hell, Ive finally gotten my hands on it! Many claimed Prey to the world to be the bands best release since Lycanthro punk, mixing Wolfpacks earlier and metallic sound with the more pure hardcorepunk of later Wolfbrigade. But after Comalive I dare you to claim Prey to the world as being better.
This is such a trip, a total blast from the past. With the intro Im instantly thrown back in time to the days of listening over and over again to the A new dawn fades album (my personal top pick of the act), as it reminds me a whole lot of Outlaw vagabond (one of my all-time favourite songs, sans genre). So my expectations are high, damn high. And while it doesnt reach the heights of said favourite album (but how could it, really) it is easily one of their best outputs in years. The sound might not be as metal-based and clean, but theres no denying the utterly powerful riffing this band possess. It is really taking a major leap back to their earlier sound. I cant help but to air-guitar myself numb with such marvelous guitar work. It is oh-so-heavy, and it makes such a tremendous impact.
Slick, well-written and executed guitar and bass work, without a doubt the best under the name of Wolfbrigade. Rumbling and raging, easily pleasing the fellow metal-head. But, this isnt all metal. A lot of the times the later era of the band shines through, and some tremendous, more pure, crustcore takes its toll on the music. A track like Deny tomorrow can represent that. But every now and then they flirt with Motrhead-esque rock, with Web of lies standing out the most. Another noticeable track is High tech degradation, a re-recording of a song originally released on their split with Audio Kollaps.
Comalive is a damn fine release, a really top of the line album. Even the cover artwork reminisce of days of yore. I tell ya, its not easy to air-guitar, air-drum and headbang all at once, but how can you not? It would definitely get full points if I didnt know of A new dawn fades. Its cutting it damn close, but I dont think theyll be able to match that album.
